More Cosi

Posted: 08.09.2005

So, as promised, today was a rehearsal of Mozart’s opera, Cosi fan tutte, with Adam Fischer conducting.  Adam Fischer is a very interesting conductor.  He is definitely very musical, and I get the impression that that is the very reason that the Wiener Philharmoniker really likes him.  I found him a bit frenetic, but it was very involved.  I have to admit that I also liked him, but I couldn’t figure out why.  Technically he is fine.  Nothing spectacular, but he really has a like-ability.  It MUST be because he is so passionate about the music he makes.  (It’s Mozart, not Tchaikovsky, I know, but even then a conductor must have a BELIEF in his interpretation and in his musical ideas.)  The singers were fine, but the staging was very unusual.  I agree that most stage directors are just trying new things, but something about this staging was unnerving, and I’m not sure what it was.
