Houston, TX

So I just got into Houston, TX today. I used to love driving from Midland to Houston, but recently, it seems as though the trip gets longer and longer. I was happy to do it because it means I get to spend some time with my best friend from college, Dee Kodityal. (Who has yet to buy the cd I have out with the Orchestre National, but at least he didn't copy it.) I had a chance to see my cousin in Austin last night as well as spend some time with a friend of mine from high school. (We discussed politics, and I think between the two of us, we solved all the world's problems.)
When I arrived in Houston, I ended up going with Dee to an Indian medical student mixer. It was funny. I was quickly labelled the "fringe Indian" by all the other Indians, and my friend Dee got instant points for bringing me. (You see, we Indians who grew up in the US have a joke that there are only 3 Indian-approved fields - medicine, engineering and computer science.) One of Dee's friends commented that I was the first right brained Indian she had met. Sigh... The fun of stereotyping.
The irony, of course, is that more and more Indians who grew up in the US are branching into a number of fields - look at M. Night Shyamalan. (The 6th Sense director). All in all it was a rather humorous evening. Though I'm sure my mom would have said, "Thank god. Maybe he'll be smart and marry a doctor." Something is just wrong about that statement.
