Funny, but I think that's the name of an Elliot Carter opera. I've been up to my ears in music lately! Since taking on this opera company, I've been lucky to finally get publishers to send me music! (Some of the publishers don't even wait for me to ask for the scores!) We are constantly working on programming farther in the future (especially since we seem to be Houston's place to be!) I have boxes of music lying around for me to go through, and I have to say - it's a blast! We're working on getting our Philip Glass operas selected for next year's Opera Vista Festival.
We're currently in the planning stages for our collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. (The actual venue will be Bayou Bend, and we'll be performing outside, so this should be a blast!) We are planning on doing Amy Beach's Cabildo and the suite from Aaron Copland's The Tender Land. They are both going to be firsts for me, so it should be really fun!
I spent part of the afternoon going through the Amy Beach score that was sent to me from the special collections at UMKC. Both the librarians and the staff at the MacDowell Colony have been extremely helpful in getting the materials sorted for our performance in September. Amy Beach is an interesting American composer. I highly suggest looking into her music. It seems a lot more straightforward than it is! Great music really does enrich one's life.
A bit of other great news - Ken David Masur won Resident Conductor in San Antonio! He's really great, and a wonderful person, so I'm very happy for him! (San Antonio really got a great resident conductor there!)
